When my now 13 year-old daughter was five she had a special necklace that she would wear everywhere. It was not a fancy or ornate necklace by any means. It was in fact, a simple little necklace she made herself out of a plain gold cord with a little gold hook. This necklace was very dear to her and she would wear it everyday, proudly displaying it around her tiny neck. Whenever anyone committed on her “jewelry” she proudly told them all about it and how she had made it herself. Although the necklace and charm worn so gracefully about her neck was precious to her, she had a more beautiful and precious ornament adorning her.
That ornament was The Word of God and his commandments. The scriptures tell us that we are to instruct our children in God’s word and as we teach them, our instruction and teaching will be a garland to grace their heads and a chain to adorn their necks. We are to be impressing God’s word, His laws and statutes upon our children.
We are to talk about them when we sit at home, when we walk along the road, when we lie down and when we get up.When we instruct our children in righteousness we are draping and adorning them in and with the Word of God like a garment of strength.
We are clothing them in faith and suiting them up in a foundation of truth that as they mature will enable them to stand. Proverbs 6:21 tells us to Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck.
Duet. 11:18 tells us to fix Gods words in our hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on our hands and bind them on our foreheads.
While my daughters gold necklace was precious to her, God’s word is more precious than any jewel, silver or gold and has a life long lasting affect Now eight years later I look back at my daughters simple little necklace in a new light. She has grown into a beautiful young lady who loves the Lord, she adores His word and strives to live it daily.
That necklace worn with so much joy back then serves as a reminder of the true necklace that she wears draped about her neck today, the beautiful grace of God’s Word.
I encourage you today to adorn your children, no matter how young or how old with the Word of God.
Show them the beauty of God’s Word, his laws and statutes that they may desire them above silver and gold.
